The city of Vienna has commissioned T-Systems to design an integrated website for mobile hazardous materials collection at www.wien.at. The citizen-friendly portal enables registered users to access current, individual and demand-oriented information about the services offered for mobile collection. The new Internet site supports the "Aktion Saubere Stadt" (clean city campaign) initiated by Viennese environmental city councilwoman Ulli Sima. The goal of the campaign is to increase citizens' motivation to separate their garbage for the sake of the environment.
"With over 50 collection sites for hazardous materials, 19 of which are located at the Vienna garbage dumps, Vienna boasts a very tight network for collecting hazardous materials. "However, we especially see potential for improvement in the collection containers outside of the city dumps and markets," says senate councilman Josef Thon, department director of the MA 48 waste management, street cleaning and vehicle fleet for the city of Vienna. "In order to provide the citizens of Vienna with a more effective collection network, we're currently conducting a trial on switching from stationary containers to using trucks for mobile hazardous materials collection," adds senate councilman Thon.
Pilot projects have been running in the Viennese districts of Alsergrund and Donaustadt since September 10th. To make the collection offer more attractive and simple, T-Systems has designed a web portal for the program. This is a convenient, modern information medium for citizens and can be set up individually. T-Systems is acting as the general contractor for this project. The ICT service provider developed the application for the SMS service and is responsible for the pilot operation of the new citizen service at www.wien.at.
Mobile hazardous materials collection "PROSA"
Special trucks visit the mobile collection sites every 14 days. At the sites, citizens can dump hazardous materials, old cooking oil and now, for the first time, small electronic devices such as hairdryers, radios, electric toothbrushes and video recorders. Citizens can schedule a reminder for two days in advance that appears as an email or SMS. The portal provides information on all of MA48's service offers and is available to Internet users in the city of Vienna free of charge.
With this new citizen service, both the environment and the citizens of Vienna are the winners. The environment benefits from an increase in the separated disposal of problematic materials, old cooking oil and electronic devices as well as a reduction in illegal dumping. The citizens of Vienna benefit from more citizen services and convenience, since the drive to the hazardous waste collection sites is now shorter. The city of Vienna is planning to extend the mobile collection program to include all of Vienna if the project in the pilot districts proves successful.
