Special T-Systems prize goes to NODBOX in European competition for satellite navigation

Frankfurt am Main, October 24, 2007

T-Systems has awarded a special prize to the French company NODBOX as part of the "European Satellite Navigation Competition 2007" at the Systems trade fair in Munich (23-26 October). The Europe-wide competition awards prizes to entries with the best ideas for corporate applications in the areas of localization and navigation. NODBOX has developed an application based on the technology used in the European satellite navigation system Galileo that improves car passenger safety.
One reason why T-Systems selected the idea was the fact that it complements the company's own solution portfolio for business customers in the automotive sector. The idea is also very practical for users thanks to its safety concept. Now, both companies are planning to develop joint project collaborations in which they will realize the system and be able to integrate it into vehicles.
T-Systems, the business customer subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, initiated the award as the Official Chief Sponsor of the entire competition. The prize includes the realization of the project concept in collaboration with the ICT provider’s Location-Based Services Business Center. Around 50 companies submitted their suggestions for future applications based on Galileo.
Warning for car drivers who drive too fast
The NODBOX concept increases safety on the road. A warning system in the car lets the driver know in advance if he is approaching a turn too fast in poor weather conditions and is running the risk of losing control. To generate the alarm, the application combines information on the section of road being travelled with indications of how fast the car is currently going. The application also processes signals received from street monitors regarding the current weather conditions. The solution evaluates all of this information in real-time and is therefore able to warn the driver of potential risks ahead of time. Current systems do not react until the tires have already started to skid.
About NODBOX
NODBOX, a French company launched in 2004, develops innovative solutions for road management and vehicle safety. Their first solution, NodboxSafeRoad, is a patented real-time risk prediction for driver safety, taking into account all factors of the driver’s ecosystem, including the road, vehicle, driving and conditions and vehicle movement. In March 2007, NODBOX received the BEST INNOV 2007 award from Capital-IT, an event dedicated to demonstrating and financing innovative technologies and applications that will affect the future.
European Satellite Navigation Competition
The European Satellite Navigation Competition is an international competition for the best concept for innovation applications in the area of satellite navigation. The competition has been held since 2004 by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen and the Systems trade fair (Munich) and addresses companies, entrepreneurs, research institutes, universities and private applicants. Initially including three partner regions, this year's competition took place in 11 European high-tech regions: Bavaria, Nice-Sophia Antipolis, Great Britain and Ireland, Gothenburg, South Holland, Prague, Madrid, Wallonia, Hesse and the new regions Baden-Württemberg and Lombardy. The competition is intended to strengthen the collaboration between these regions within Europe, especially when it comes to the development of applications and services that will enable the realization of the European satellite system Galileo. The patron of the European Satellite Navigation Competition is the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. The competition is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), the German Aerospace Center and the DHL Innovation Center. The Official Chief Sponsor of the European Satellite Navigation Competition is T-Systems.
