In Friedrichshafen, users will soon be checking their energy consumption live online. T-Systems is realizing an eMetering project near Lake Constance for the T-City.
At the T-Systems booth, CeBIT visitors were able to use an Apple iPhone to read the meter of the T-City project office in Friedrichshafen, Germany. By mid-2009, a growing number of the city's residents will be able to use the full-area coverage online portal, which will be implemented and operated by T-Systems, to securely and conveniently check their gas and electricity consumption via their Internet browser. The first customers are already testing the solution with new meters, which send information on current consumption to a central database via DSL or wireless technology. The Technischen Werke Friedrichshafen (TWF) are providing the meter infrastructure for the pilot project. Bittner + Krull Softwaresysteme GmbH from Munich is responsible for energy data management.
Creating transparency – stopping energy hogs
Since the solution updates the consumption information every 15 minutes, households can use the portal to better identify energy hogs soon after they have been turned on. Environmentally-conscious users can then unplug these devices when they are not being used. The solution also helps energy providers comply with the EU energy efficiency guidelines for 2008. The guidelines dictate that companies inform their private customers of their current gas and electricity consumption once a month.
