Job hunting without all the paperwork

April 14, 2008

Whether they want to sell ice cream, make pizza or harvest grapes at a vineyard: Citizens from countries that do not belong to the EU now apply online for their work permits in Italy.
In the past, when citizens of non-EU states wanted to find temporary work in the Italian tourism or agricultural industry, they first had to fill out a lot of paperwork and spend even more time waiting. Now, in the wake of the Italian immigration law passed in 2007, this has changed. Effective immediately, seasonal workers must apply for their work permits online. This will accelerate the approval process and entirely do away with mountains of paperwork. The new policy will save on administrative costs and protect the environment.
Some 700,000 applications already
Within three months, T-Systems developed an online solution for the Italian Ministry of the Interior. The solution provides the Ministry with a quick overview of all relevant information and enables employees to analyze applicant data with just the click of a mouse. All immigration offices in the provinces are connected to the central system. Employees access the central system to issue the work permits. Since the law was initially passed, 700,000 non-EU citizens have already used the system to apply for a work permit.
