ThyssenKrupp is building a new steel factory and port in Brazil. The company plans to use remote identification and tracking technology to speed up logistics processes.
The new ThyssenKrupp steel factory in Brazil will produce five million tons of steel. Some 120 ships will be able to load and unload each year at the factory's port. The company is investing in innovative technology for its logistics processes. ThyssenKrupp will use an RFID (radio frequency identification) solution that can automatically recognize steel ingots, or slabs. A small "mini-computer" containing a unique ID will be attached to each slab. The RFID tags will be scanned and afterwards, the information are passed on to a T-Systems data center in Frankfurt.
Central online data platform
All of the RFID data traffic will be collected on T-Systems' AutoID/Right Time Enterprise Services (RES) platform. This means that registered users will be able to access the data online at any time. Moreover, the solution will notify employees of the steel company when slabs are improperly loaded or transport times exceeded. T-Systems can control all RFID scanner locations worldwide from Frankfurt. The solution will shorten turnaround times at the port in Brazil and enable employees to track a shipment's location while in transit.
