Smart grid cooperation
April 14, 2010
ABB, a specialist for energy and automation technology, and T-Systems will develop solutions for intelligent power grids.
German law states that the amount of power from renewable resources is to be raised to 30% by 2020. However, the increasing number of decentralized and regenerative energies will lead to a more complex distribution network. In the future, power consumption needs to be based more strongly on fluctuating power generation, otherwise efficient operation of the overall system will not be possible.
The solutions developed by ABB and Deutsche Telekom give consumers and energy providers more transparency regarding power consumption and a way to control it. The cooperation partners are convinced that smart grids form the necessary basis for efficiently and securely integrating renewable energy resources and for attaining increased energy efficiency in power supply. Intelligent networks are able to transfer information that is necessary for automated control in real-time via data networks.
Integrated power for smart energy
"By joining forces, ABB and Deutsche Telekom are combining their know-how, which is perfectly matched to create smart grids," said Peter Smits, CEO of ABB AG and Head of the Central Europe region.
Reinhard Clemens, member of the Deutsche Telekom Board of Management and T-Systems CEO, added: "The energy market is facing a radical change: power and data networks are converging. We have the necessary broadband fixed and mobile network, the service staff on-site and experience in handling mass data. After all, we process more than 40 million telecommunication invoices every month in our data centers."
ABB and Deutsche Telekom will develop intelligent power grids together with other project partners at T-City Friedrichshafen.
