A Solution for TRUMPF

A future-safe MPLS-based communications system interconnects all national and international sites of this long-established, family-owned company to promote its growth.

At a glance

TRUMPF is a successful, globally operating technology supplier that primarily produces medical and manufacturing equipment. The success story of this family-owned business began in 1923. Although its product portfolio was originally limited to flexible shafts, TRUMPF soon began to develop its own metalworking machines. Today, the TRUMPF group is the largest machine tool producer worldwide with production facilities on all continents. In addition, it is the world market leader and technology leader in the field of lasers and laser systems. The TRUMPF group employs 8,000 people at 50 subsidiaries in 30 countries, and it achieved sales of 2.15 billion euros for the fiscal year 2007/2008. The TRUMPF group also invested 135 million euros in research and development during the same period in order to maintain and continually strengthen its leading position.

Challenge

Standardizing network structures and creating new platforms

Despite continual IT investments, the company’s organically grown, fragmented network infrastructure was no longer able to meet the demands of a multi-national company. It, therefore, became necessary to build a uniform network infrastructure equipped identically over all sites. The goal was to streamline interoperability and provide a platform that can accommodate new applications and services in the future. A crucial requirement for TRUMPF as a manufacturing company was that the restructured network must also ensure high availability of the entire system. A few of the core systems, such as the SAP system, for example, require a high level of security as well as high availability.
Since TRUMPF’s customers must be able to access the centrally provided web shops, a permanent, high-performance Internet connection was also one of the stated requirements – but, of course, this must not compromise the security of the corporate network. TRUMPF additionally desired to be able to monitor the entire service process in-house at all times.

Cooperating together on analysis and monitoring

The deciding factor for contracting T-Systems to plan and implement the restructuring project was T-Systems’ ability to supply all services from a single source, both nationally and internationally. By analyzing the existing applications and monitoring network load, T-Systems was able to offer the TRUMPF group a comprehensive, optimized network concept that met all of the stated requirements while at the same time being easy to expand in the future. The additional features of the concept as well as increased performance coupled with improved availability and security, made it easy to decide in favor of T-Systems for the planning and implementation of the solution. With its contractually binding Service Level Agreements, T-Systems guarantees a consistently high quality of service throughout the entire solution.

Technical overview

At the heart of the solution implemented by T-Systems for the TRUMPF group is a company-wide network based on T-Systems’ own MPLS backbone. This network connects all national and international sites with each other and with the Internet. All components vital to the operation and availability of the system are configured redundantly in order to ensure maximum availability. Application data, voice data (VoIP) and video data are all transported over the same network. QoS/CoS (Quality of Service/Classes of Service) attributes defined at all sites allow time- and business-critical data to be transmitted with a higher priority. Security is guaranteed at all times for the entire network due to the centralized administration of the network interfaces, as well as to the proactive system monitoring provided by T-Systems.

Customer benefits

Increased performance with enhanced transparency

As a global manufacturing company, the TRUMPF group must be able to rely on uninterrupted accessibility and availability of its network infrastructure. With its “Global Corporate Access” system, T-Systems guarantees worldwide access to the corporate network with the result that substantial synergies taken advantage of. TRUMPF’s customers also have round-the-clock online access to the data provided for them. T-Systems’ contractually guaranteed availability as well as the redundant configuration of all network components ensure maximum security and availability. ICT monitoring, which is an integral part of the solution, allows TRUMPF to gain for itself an immediate overview at all times as to the quality of service of the entire system. TRUMPF works here hand in hand with T-Systems’ 2nd and 3rd level support, but the overall, start to finish responsibility for the entire solution rests clearly with T-Systems. The solution is rounded out by the professional round-the-clock (24/7) service T-Systems provides from a single source, even internationally.

Ready to meet new challenges – in summary

As a market and technology leader in its business, TRUMPF must also ensure that its communications infrastructure is state-of-the-art with the latest technologies. This is where T-Systems Consulting provides the necessary professional support. Continual optimization at all sites of the IT applications (via ICT analyses, ICT monitoring, ICT optimization) serves to improve communications with internal and external partners - a competitive edge that pays dividends. The IntraSelect solution from T-Systems forms the basis of a standardized Next Generation Network (NGN) platform that will optimally support the family-owned company’s future growth by allowing new services, applications and features to be implemented at any time.
