In Emden, 100 households in a new housing development will get intelligent gas and electricity meters. Deutsche Telekom AG is installing the ICT infrastructure for the utility company.

The smart meters provide information on electricity consumption every 15 minutes and on gas consumption every hour to the Stadtwerke Emden (Emden public utility company). This takes place over a separate and secure DSL line. The numbers are analyzed and interpreted and then published on a secure Internet portal for viewing by gas and electricity customers. “We are currently carrying out a customer survey to ascertain the general level of interest in this new technology,” says Remmer Edzards, CEO of Stadtwerke Emden. “Initial results show that a large number of electricity and gas customers want to know how they can actively reduce their energy consumption using intelligent meters.” If this tendency is confirmed, Stadtwerke Emden also plans to install smart meters in other residential areas.
Deutsche Telekom is offering Stadtwerke Emden smart metering as a complete service for a fixed monthly price.
