Unique Disaster Recovery System in Europe
At a glance
Banca Popolare di Sondrio, founded in 1871, was one of the first among cooperative banks in Italy inspired by the grass-roots cooperative banking movement. Over time, thanks to the gradual expansion of its activities and of its geographical presence, BPS has taken on a regional dimension with a significant presence in Rome and operational capabilities extending throughout the country, while still retaining strong ties to its area of origin.
Over time and thanks to the gradual expansion of its activities and presence, the bank gained more regional dimensions with the possibility of operating nationwide, while at the same time keeping strong ties to the place of origin. The bank can offer its customers (families, professionals, small and large companies, public institutions, etc …) services that will satisfy their every banking, financial or insurance need. Alongside their primary banking activity, the bank also promotes cultural initiatives: amongst these stand out, for their prestige and interest, the organization of events linked to the names of eminent personalities and a refined publishing activity. The bank’s capital, which stands at around 925 million Euros is shared with nearly 163.000 shareholders, most of whom are customers. Net profit in 2009 was 1.493 million Euros. The bank employs more then 2.450 persons, and has 278 branches.
- Best of breed solution
- Disaster Recovery (nearly a Business Continuity)
- Remote System Management (through an integration of both Server Farm Management Processes)
- Backup Consolidation
Solution
The proposal from T-Systems (based on EMC2 technology and Cisco equipment), makes use of best-of-breed solutions and applications capable of managing the functionalities of Remote Systems Management, Storage Area Network, Backup, Monitoring, Problem/Incident Management and Change Management in an integrated and comprehensive way. This solution demands a special equipment: the project was developed with a data compression algorithm during the exchange phase between the 2 server rooms, as well as ensuring higher reliability in comparison with traditional solutions, requires a lower investment in transmission bandwidth. Thanks to a high level of granularity, in the event of activation of the Disaster Recovery procedures, the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) times are close to zero. This is an innovative Disaster Recovery concept in which the system intercepts the flows of data recorded on the Storage Area Network and guarantees the accurate writing of the information on both the primary and the secondary sites. This being additional functionality external to the SAN, it has given the system a noticeable flexibility. A solution of this type would hardly have been achievable using traditional equipment, without becoming extremely complicated.
Customer benefits
The choice of solution has turned out to be a real success. It led Banca Popolare di Sondrio to the use of innovative solutions, even ones not traditionally consolidated, and we always tried to read between the lines of the technology to find out what might be the added value. The innovative solution guarantees availability of core applications (Internet Banking services), consolidation and renewal of the technological architecture. Furthermore, it allows an internal cost optimization for Banca Popolare di Sondrio (its computer room can deliver daily activities from 7 a.m. till 7 p.m. and then entrust T-Systems with nightly management), passing through Remote System Management Service, with all activities related to Backup, Monitoring, Problem/Incident and Change Management.
