VoIP becomes the heart of the business

Central telephone systems strengthen security management

How IP telephone systems come together

In this era of advanced IP, the transmission of speech no longer requires any special hardware. It runs as a VoIP application on servers and communicates over data networks. Companies should therefore centralize their typically decentralized aged-ISDN. This brings costs down and increases security and call quality simultaneously. T-Systems offers SIP trunking and SIP gateways based on the relevant session initiation protocol.

Strenuous operational management is a thing of the past

Operational management used to be very strenuous. In the time of ISDN, there was a telephone system at almost every company. This made operation costs correspondingly expensive. The IT department had to maintain each telephone system individually, book individual new ISDN connections for each location, and install them – a difficult protocol for any IT employee to handle. SIP trunking and gateways weren't yet considered for use in connection with landline calls.

Classic phone call systems, much like the internet, are a core functionality in any company. Tele- and web conferences are becoming increasingly popular. However, companies invest comparatively little in their telephone infrastructure. Established technologies are now well developed and reliable. They may not appear essential for the communication processes of a company since a telephone conversation is self-explanatory. But the configuration, functionality, and reliability of the technology behind it are becoming increasingly decisive for many business processes crucial to a company's success.

The switch from traditional telephone systems to IP systems now offers companies the best opportunity to optimize their network design and to centralize with Voice over IP. Calls no longer require any special hardware with advanced IP. Like email, it runs as an application on servers and communicates over data networks. And it is almost irrelevant now where the server is located. Phone calls via VoIP have never been easier.

The technology change can have an impact on internal organization. The specific purchase of a telephone system or a specific form of call service management will soon be a thing of the past. Calls will simply be more like one application within a broad range of IP-based services.

SIP gateways consolidate voice traffic

SIP trunks and SIP gateways from T-Systems are the VoIP successors of ISDN and analog connections. SIP (session initiation protocol) is a protocol that allows IP-based communication platforms to connect with public telephone networks, for example. Therefore, SIP improves the overall telecommunication infrastructure of a company.

Both telephone technologies follow different approaches to finding solutions. Standardized SIP trunks are mostly used locally. They replace traditional telephone connections. SIP trunking requires no new cable to be set up. Companies book various additional voice channels and only pay for the required amount.

Gateways instead of local trunking

SIP technology can also be centralized. To achieve this, an individual SIP gateway connects all of the voice traffic between the public network and the company. This has particular advantages when compared to a local SIP trunk. Contrary to local SIP connections, central SIP gateways can use phone numbers from all ISDN and analog connections, as well as from connections that were based at different locations, until now. Moreover, employees not only carry over their personal extension number when they change places at their location, but also company-wide.

With an SIP gateway, companies can also centralize their security management. Speaking of security: phone calls using Voice over IP are secure. This is because, contrary to over-the-top providers, Deutsche Telekom SIP gateways offer VoIP over secure, private networks and not over public internet.

And it is precisely this aspect that has a positive effect on call quality. This doesn't have to mean high data consumption. A professional carrier IP telephone system is fundamentally different to calls via the internet. The quality of phone calls over SIP trunks is very easy to ensure.

The voice service at the connection and in the carrier IP network are prioritized in comparison to other services. This allows you to always carry out phone calls using the Deutsche Telekom network in the contracted quality.

Furthermore, internal Voice over IP calls don't require a gateway into the public network. The number of necessary external voice channels is therefore reduced even further. This in turn increases the required bandwidth in the company network for internal and external calls.

Companies can either operate their central telephone systems themselves or contract this out to a service provider. Alternatively, they can obtain a complete system from the external private or public cloud. In these cases, the customer migrates both their ISDN telephone system and connections simultaneously into a unified, central SIP solution. The preferred variant depends on each company's individual security management approach.

Calls become an IP service

SIP gateways for international VoIP

Email servers are operated entirely centrally, even when their locations extend across all of Europe. And what about calls? Until now, the IT department was tasked with separately booking each telephone connection, as well as installing and managing them. For this reason, companies with multiple locations in particular should standardize and centralize their telephone infrastructure internationally.

T-Systems offers Corporate SIP International for this very purpose. Behind this is a central gateway, currently for 18 European countries, with up to 50,000 parallel external phone calls. The advantage of this SIP solution: the locations no longer require traditional telephone connections.

In addition, the landline numbers of the previously local connections can be migrated onto the central SIP gateway. Companies now have one data and voice network provider and one framework agreement for all countries.
