“We were especially looking for a provider with considerable competency in the areas of data privacy and data security.“
Robert Holkenbrink, Head of Development and Product Management at NZR
Energy management from the Cloud
Energy costs – particularly in energy-intensive sectors – can become a huge liability. Some firms have to spend up to 10 percent of their turnover to cover them. Rising energy prices only make the problem more acute. So intelligent energy management systems like those provided by NZR can really pay off for many companies.
You can only truly hope to reduce your energy consumption once you know exactly when and where you’re using it – and wasting it. Furthermore, certified energy management systems are also the basis for receiving Germany’s state subsidies, such as peak balancing for energy and electricity taxes, as well as reducing the country’s renewable energy levy. NZR has developed its own software to do just that: CountVision. The program collects and analyzes data from energy meters connected to bus systems. Using standard APIs, the data can also be processed in other company applications, such as ERP systems or invoicing programs. “CountVision lets us display all processes associated with efficient energy management,” says Robert Holkenbrink, director of development at NZR. “And as a certified system, companies can also use it save electricity taxes and Germany’s renewable energy levy.”
Simple and secure software
A comprehensive solution processing lots of data – that requires considerable IT resources. Many companies also don’t want to invest a lot of time and effort necessary to install and administer such a system on site. The answer? CountVision offered as software as a service. “This makes things extremely convenient for our customers. They become simply users instead of technicians, operators or IT administrators,” explains Holkenbrink. The company uses IT resources from the Open Telekom Cloud to run the software. “Our customers have high expectations when it comes to data protection,” says NZR’s director of development. With storage and processing of all data done in German data centers, as well as its important ISO and TÜV certifications, the Open Telekom Cloud could meet and exceed those expectations. “Auditing by our external data protection commissioner was amazingly straightforward, which was very impressive,” says Holkenbrink.
A pilot project for CountVision from the Open Telekom Cloud began in spring 2017. Just half a year later, hundreds of meters had been connected to it. The feedback has been positive: Industrial firms are improving their energy efficiency. Energy providers are monitoring their network usage to reduce waste and are boosting customer loyalty by offering remote meter reading. And all of this is being achieved without burdening their own IT departments. NZR, in turn, has noticed customer satisfaction is up, software sales are increasing and, thanks to modern cloud technology, completely new types of customers are being acquired.

NZR Nordwestdeutsche Zählerrevision Ing. Aug. Knemeyer GmbH & Co. KG uses its web-based software CountVision to give energy-intensive companies the opportunity to improve their energy efficiency and take advantage of tax breaks. This has become even more convenient – and absolutely secure – for users after the application was moved to the Open Telekom Cloud.
Aware of the growing trend toward energy efficiency, NZR wanted to tap new customer segments for its energy management software.
But many customers didn’t want to install the software at their own data centers.
NZR needed a partner that could make its software cloud-ready and provide the necessary resources to operate it.
