Historization specifically for large firms

With Managed Application Retirement Services (M.A.R.S.), companies fulfill their responsibility of the historization of legacy data. The secure end-to-end service is tailored to the complex requirements of large, evolved system landscapes with SAP and non-SAP applications.

All data and documents stored centrally in the cloud

The starting point is a standardized project with a tried and tested methodical approach. All data and documents are extracted from the existing applications and automatically transferred to a central database in the cloud. This applies to financial data, product information, reports and other documents. Even existing archive data and external data can be integrated. The logic of the legacy data separated from the applications is carried over to the new platform. This means that access to the now unchangeable data is as intuitive and fast as usual. Authorized users can visualize the data according to various criteria or create evaluations and reports. To ensure the success of the transfer, the historization is accompanied by appropriate services: such as project, risk, quality and change management.

Legal conformity for decades

Managed Application Retirement Services include not only the transfer project, during which the legacy systems are deactivated, but also the subsequent service for platform operation in the private or public cloud. The data remains easily available and searchable for 30 years or longer.

Logo International Watch Co. AG (IWC)
IWC has replaced the previous Enterprise Resource Planning system with a more modern SAP ERP system. Together with T-Systems, 230 gigabytes of legacy data were archived on just one JiVS platform.

Challenges facing the customer:

  • In 2012, IWC replaced Sage ERP b2 with SAP ERP
  • A large part of the master and movement data was transferred
  • Old data on two old servers and software with expiring maintenance
  • Customer service, spare parts procurement and sales require data access
  • Data from around 150 years of watchmaking were in the company record books
  • IWC wanted a cost-effective, central archive solution for these old data – modern and with quick access to all information required

Benefits for the customer:

  • Customer, service and manufacturing data for all IWC watches produced over the last 150 years are stored at low cost on just one JiVS platform
  • The old server hardware and software no longer need to be updated
  • Reduced quantity of data and phasing out of the two expensive old ERP servers
  • Quick and convenient data access (80 users) saves working time
  • JiVS research function can be used by other business divisions
  • Other data which must be reteined can also be migrated

Legacy data as a result of change

Legacy data as a result of change

When a company is faced with handling a variety of strategic tasks, such as growth, digitization and consolidation, it can quickly lose sight of the IT structures behind the scenes. However, it is precisely these system landscapes that have to change as technological enablers in order for a company to achieve its strategic goals. Whether mergers, corporate acquisitions, business transfers, leveraged takeovers, outsourcing and insourcing, spin-offs, carve-outs or corporate cooperation – in any case, legacy systems are created that nobody needs anymore. For legal reasons, however, the data must be retained for decades in such a way that targeted access and deletion is possible at any time.

Continue or deactivate legacy systems?

Further operation of these legacy systems involves a great deal of effort and expense. And all of this for data that is only rarely accessed, but nevertheless accessed in a targeted manner. The encapsulation of legacy applications eliminates the costs, but program errors and gaps are also taken over. System adaptations required by law are also hardly possible anymore. If the information is stored in other media and started up as required, it is usually not possible to extract data together with the associated document archives. It is also questionable whether other media can map the logic to the data and documents in question. If not, a targeted search is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The fact is deactivating the old systems reduces costs and complexity.

Audit-proof historization in the cloud

Historization refers to the intelligent decommissioning of systems, detached from previous applications. This is also the difference to traditional archiving, in which the archive is still accessed via the original application. Historization is all about understanding the data logic of applications, however complex they may be. In addition, the criticality and availability requirements of the data as well as the respective data strategy of the company are taken into account. If companies use the Managed Application Retirement Services, data and documents are transferred to a highly secure, dedicated cloud environment while taking the respective corporate requirements into account. All individual compliance requirements can also be easily implemented in the new environment. Legal requirements such as the EU GDPR and GoBD conformity are automatically met.
