The Helix Nebula initiative, co-funded by the European Commission, breaks new ground in cloud computing for businesses and scientific institutions. As a result of its Science Cloud project, research organizations across Europe gain access to vast virtual resources – such as the immense processing power vital to simulating complex processes. CERN, EMBL and ESA join the Helix Nebula community

The first pilot projects have already been launched – for example at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN. Its particle accelerator generates over 25,000 terabytes of data annually. Consequently, powerful ICT solutions are vital to rapidly and reliably processing these huge datasets. This is where Helix Nebula plays its essential role – via its Science Cloud, more than 10,000 virtual machines can be provisioned simply and swiftly. 
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) harnesses Helix Nebula’s infrastructure to analyze genomes and perform other research tasks at multiple sites. Its mission is to gain a better understanding of genetics, and to develop new treatments for genetic disorders and cancer.
The European Space Agency (ESA) analyzes multiple terabytes of data in the form of satellite images on a daily basis. Additionally, it leverages Helix Nebula’s services to connect with other research centers across the globe – for example, to identify and issue warnings of impending natural disasters.
