ProRail Starts Cloud Transition with T-Systems

May 1, 2019

Downers Grove, IL, May 1, 2019 – ProRail has entered into a 30 year contract with T-Systems for the supply of data center capacity, cloud services and other associated infrastructure services.  ProRail is a rail infrastructure manager that together, with its import companies, ensures that 1.2 million passengers and 100,000 tons of goods arrive at their destination every day.
The business-critical systems and applications of ProRail are currently housed in three 'National Data Centers' (NDCs), one of which will close soon. However, the company anticipates growth in the demand for data center capacity. Developments such as the transition to a new Rail Traffic Management System and the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) are both reasons that led ProRail to look for support from T-Systems.
T-Systems will provide data center services such as the supply of floor space, cooling and electricity within closed cages and floor management.
For non-business-critical applications ProRail will begin its transition to the cloud with T-Systems facilitating the access to the cloud, supplying cloud services based on VMware's vCloud technology and offering general consultancy throughout the process.
ProRail will continue to intensify the use of cloud services to ensure its own data center capacity become less important long term. The rail operator will look at Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service.
"This agreement positions us as the preferred cloud partner of ProRail," says Sake Algra, general manager at T-Systems. "With the delivery of cloud services we can really make a difference and help ProRail provide more accessibility to many railways.”
