Dirk Backofen is responsible for the Digital Identity Business of Deutsche Telekom and T-Systems. In this role, he is responsible for a new business unit that includes all identity technologies such as EUDI Wallet, eID, Smart eID and OIDC.
Dirk coordinates all activities of Telekom/T-Systems around the project “Ecosystem of Digital Identities in Germany”. His current focus is on developing an EUDI Wallet with a maximum of implemented use cases to support the idea of a public-private partnership between the federal government and the business community to drive a mass market breakthrough for secure digital identities in Germany. He is responsible for Deutsche Telekom’s contribution to use cases, architecture and in EUDI-compliant ID Wallet systems for the EU Large Scale Pilots LSP I and LSP II.
Dirk also represents Deutsche Telekom/T-Systems as a member of the Board of Management in the Shareholders’ Council and on the Supervisory Board of Verimi. He developed the “Wallet as a Service” business model, in which T-Systems and Verimi provide the Sek-IPD for BARMER and AOK, an innovative cloud-based identity solution based on confidential computing, HSM support, and operator exclusion that runs on T-Systems’ Open Sovereign Cloud.
In 2016, Dirk Backofen successfully built up the Telekom Security business unit – a startup within Deutsche Telekom AG. Dirk ran this business until April 2020.
Dirk Backofen holds a master degree in computer science from Chemnitz University of Technology/Germany and has been working for Deutsche Telekom since 1991.
