Train passengers want to know whether their journey will go according to plan and if they will make all of their connections. To this end, Deutsche Bahn uses its Forecasting Machine (“Prognoseautomat”), which calculates train departure and arrival times in real time using AI. The algorithm makes use of data from previous train journeys, live data from train routes and stations, as well as information regarding delays to other trains. Ideally, this allows passengers to make connections despite delays, or else alternative travel options can be displayed and passengers informed in good time.

The digital infrastructure of the ITCS facilitates more accurate timetables and scheduling. The solution records all movements of buses and trains in real time. The timetable information is compared with the current traffic situation and status reports from the bus/train. Passengers receive important information via app or from display boards along the transportation network.
