Innovative and forward-thinking solutions with AI

The rapid spread of ChatGPT has caused quite a stir. Since its launch, it has experienced the fastest-ever uptake of any application. But what added value can generative AI offer you? How can you get started, and is it actually safe? Our experts in artificial intelligence (AI), data science, data protection, and law have developed specific questions to help you quickly ascertain whether generative AI is relevant to your business.

What is ChatGPT?

Menschenfinger und Roboterfinger

ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. It is a form of machine learning technology trained on a large corpus of text data. Via a chatbot, it generates human-like responses in natural language processing tasks.

What is special about ChatGPT?

The fascinating thing about ChatGPT is that the AI technology has the capability to carry out many tasks with near-human competence in real-time. It isn't just the quality of the output that is impressive, but also the accessibility via a chatbot and the ability to conduct long and complicated discussions. Anyone can use ChatGPT – back-office tasks relevant to advanced artificial intelligence include:

  • Understanding, generating, and summarizing texts
  • Producing dialogue with contextual understanding, including words with multiple potential meanings
  • Understanding and translating a variety of languages
  • Utilizing programming languages to generate, test, and document code

Understanding ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a service from OpenAI in the sector known as generative AI. This service is based on what is known as "large language models", that is, AI models for language, which are themselves based on enormous volumes of data. GPT-4 is the latest of these models. Thanks to this broad foundation of data, these models can be described as "foundation models": models which, in terms of the scope of knowledge, are comparable to a person taking a general higher education entrance qualification. Of course, this also presents challenges: the internet does not exclusively contain factually correct or ethically acceptable content. That's why it is always necessary to consider aspects relating to ethics, misinformation, and learning based on a company's own data.

Ultimately, the AI-powered model generates text predictions that are purely based on mathematical probabilities. If a significant amount of fake news and false information is distributed across the internet, AI will reflect this. Transparency regarding the development of GPT-4 and the use of user data in the OpenAI service is currently limited. However, other open-source foundation models are available to use. Despite these challenges, it is no longer possible to ignore this technology.

This blog post could be the beginning of your journey with AI. We at T-Systems and Deutsche Telekom create reliable, secure, and ethical solutions. We have already established a working group, which has been working on artificial intelligence solutions and approaches for several months, and would be happy to assist you.

The rise and rise of ChatGPT

In just five days, ChatGPT from OpenAI had 1 million registered users; in just a few weeks, it had 100 million, making it the fastest growing application in history. There is no question that artificial intelligence helps people and is taking hold in the world of work. You can generate direct added value for your end customers through improved and more efficient customer service. For example, AI apps such as ChatGPT can carry out complete customer discussions and provide contextually appropriate responses to provide technical support. T-Systems is currently working on a reference architecture to implement use cases for OpenAI.

Harness artificial intelligence

This huge, latent potential can be harnessed within your company, too, to increase quality and improve the productivity of your employees. The following are examples of possible use cases:

  • Software development: Semi-automatic code generation, documentation, and testing
  • Application management: Processing tickets and user requests
  • Summarizing and extracting information from documents and document repositories and translating texts
  • Generating ideas and creating texts, e.g., for events, workshops, or marketing purposes

These services will also be integrated into the workplace. Both Microsoft and Google have already announced that they are integrating artificial intelligence into their work tools, such as Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Imagine what the working day might look like if emails were generated, meetings were summarized, and Excel calculations were executed all on an automated basis.

There are great opportunities here, of course, but the use of AI technology should be subject to certain rules. We at T-Systems are happy to support you throughout the integration and governance process (for example, testing the solutions) and creating guidelines for using large language models and artificial intelligence applications.

Four questions on the relevance of generative AI for your business

In light of the hype, the question arises: is AI truly relevant to my business? We have compiled a list of four questions for you. If the answer to at least one of the questions is "yes", you will benefit from discussing use cases and their business potential with us.

  1. Do you have business processes that use large amounts of text (e.g., reports, offers, documentation, instructions, legal texts)?
  2. Does your customer service use written correspondence (e.g., email, chat, ticket system)?
  3. Do you spend significant time and resources on software development or application management?
  4. Do you utilize creative, search, or idea-generation processes that contain speech and/or images (e.g., workshops, events, marketing)?

If your answer is "yes" to one of these questions, T-Systems will be happy to support you in planning a potential project using artificial intelligence applications and AI tools.
