T-Systems Nation Building Journey

As a multi-national, T-Systems wishes to contribute to a society and a workplace in which respect, opportunity, cultural and gender diversity and professional excellence are combined and where, each day, we are able to take actions that will transform our company and our country, so that South Africa can truly belong to all who live in it.
T-Systems embarked on a nation building journey to transform both its South African operations and the South African ICT industry in a sustainable, meaningful manner.
The objective of the programme is to create a culture of inclusive transformation that embraces diversity and enables trust and high performance within our organisation, whilst contributing to the bigger South Africa through skills development, localisation and job creation.

T-Systems' ICT Academy

T-Systems South Africa spearheaded the development of the ICT Academy in 2003 in order to address the ICT skills shortage and made a positive difference in the lives of young individuals who never would have had the opportunity to further their studies.  Since its inception 1,824 graduates were enabled with internationally recognised ICT qualifications, with a 95% pass rate and more than 85% employment rate in ICT related fields for graduates.
The ICT Academy programme is registered with the MICT Seta and is aligned with South African Government legislation.  We make use of Training Excellence as assessor and moderator to ensure we adhere to the unit standards as specified by the Seta.  Other partners of the ICT Academy include Microsoft, SAP and CompTIA.
The T-Systems ICT Academy moved into their new premises in the heart of Johannesburg during 2014. This world class training facility currently has 166 students from previously disadvantage backgrounds and we have 28 students of 3 regions and are busy finalising our programme for 20 students living with disability.

T‑Systems South Africa, in collaboration with the Good Work Foundation, established and supports the HDLC, to actively contribute to rural education initiatives.  The HDLC has a critical focus on bridging the digital divide and narrowing the education gap between urban and rural education offerings in Mpumalanga.  Teaching is aligned to industry job prospects in the area, including Hospitality, Tourism and Conservation with ICT as a foundation to all.
2013 progress to date:
  • 800 Adults trained in ICT and Hospitality Academies (another 250 will graduate at the end of this year);
  • 3000 school learners in eight primary schools and one preschool participating in Open Learning in 2016.
It is the vision of the Good Work Foundation that corporations adopt learning centres on a grand scale and that a “digital spring uprising” of learning sweeps the country.  The long term intent is to bring digital learning centres to other rural settings.  The centres need to be digitally-powered and “online”, allowing rural communities access to world-class education and cutting-edge technology.

Every year, the programme offers interns an opportunity to get international exposure through a 5-6 week International Exchange Programme.
To date, over 640 interns have participated on the programme, with a placement rate of 75%.  However, 2015 boasts a 96% placement rate, of which 80% are employed within T‑Systems.

Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD)

Nkgwete IT Solutions Launch
Vumela IT Services Launch
T‑Systems embarked on a journey of supplier development by outsourcing Field Support Services (FSS) to vendors in the regions.  Our model for ESD is to provide the opportunity to internal and external applicants to set up their own ICT businesses in the region, without any shareholding from T‑Systems. Through this model local small businesses are being developed in the regions, while customers benefit directly from doing business with a multi-national ICT organisation in terms of parent guarantee, service delivery and risk profile.
The successful prototype, and one of our signature investments, is Nkgwete IT Solutions, a black majority female-owned company in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, launched in July 2013.  Nkgwete successfully achieved 100% SLA targets since inception.  Phase 2 of the field support services enterprise development programme saw the establishment of Vumela IT Services in KwaZulu-Natal.
The revenue impact of this ESD programme is a significant contribution towards supplier development and localisation.
Through our continuous efforts in supplier development and enterprise supplier development, local small businesses in the regions will continue to receive support to ensure sustainability and growth, which will ultimately lead to job creation.
