The telematics solution Digital Drive enables BwFPS to enhance the economic efficiency of its mobility services. The system is so transparent that every armed forces office or unit can see to what extent the mobility services it uses match its actual requirements. They can save a lot of money by finding the right mix of short- and long-term rental models. No matter what mix they go for, they retain the convenience of always having the right vehicles in the right place at the right time – and enjoying greater flexibility and higher vehicle utilization levels.

As BwFPS’s shareholder, the German Federal Ministry of Defence tasked BwFPS with making the mobility requirements of its offices and units more transparent. First off, BwFPS deployed a telematics solution to prove that it is possible to gather and evaluate mobility data and integrate that data in its own portfolio in order to add value for its customers. Given the nature of the data involved, IT security and data privacy requirements were especially stringent.

BwFPS finds the needs-based service mix

Streets that run on top of each other in several levels.

Although the first step in telematics is data capture, the number one priority for BwFPS is IT security and data protection. Once BwFPS had chosen Digital Drive from T-Systems, it reviewed the sensitivity of the information that would be captured and scrutinized the associated data flows and processing steps. 

After ascertaining that Digital Drive satisfied the stringent security requirements of the federal authorities, it gave the green light for a pilot that would involve logging measurements for around 60 vehicles. The OBD2 dongle with SIM card was inserted so that data recorded on locations, distances traveled, start and finish times and vehicle identification numbers could be transferred in an anonymized system to the secure Telekom Cloud. Middleware was used to ensure the data could be passed directly to the business intelligence heart of BwFPS, where it could then be filtered, aggregated and evaluated. The visualization shows both the adviser and customer of BwFPS at a glance whether their vehicle is being utilized to its full potential. If it isn’t, a needs-based mix of long-term and short-term models and car-sharing products is put together. It’s a win-win solution for everyone. BwFPS is reinforcing its role as a mobility consultant, units are saving unnecessary rental costs, vehicle purchases and operational expenditure are being reduced and the directive of the Federal Ministry of Defence can thus be met.

The solution:

  • Data from the cloud is transferred by means of SAP middleware process orchestration (PO) to BwFPS’s SAP business intelligence system, where it is filtered, aggregated and evaluated.
  • An internal portal of the German armed forces can be used to visualize the utilization intensity of each vehicle.

About BwFuhrparkService GmbH

BwFPS makes life easier for the units of Germany’s armed forces (the Bundeswehr). Its mobility experts ensure staff and soldiers can access civilian vehicles in virtually every standard model for all purposes and any journey, whether short-term use, long-term leasing, car-sharing and car-pooling. Thanks to digitization, a lot of processes at BwFPS are paperless and entirely electronic, such as vehicle requests and handovers. Self-service points are equipped with key safes so users can get into the vehicle they’ve booked at the pick-up location day or night. But that’s not all. BwFPS is going several digital steps further. One of those steps is rolling out the Digital Drive telematics solution. The instructions came from the top at the German Federal Ministry of Defence – the mobility requirements of units had to be made more transparent.
